Disabling ScreenTips

Summary: ScreenTips are one of those artifacts of Microsoft trying to make Excel be overly helpful. If the ScreenTips bother you, you can turn them off by following this tip.

ScreenTips are the small yellow boxes that appear as you position the mouse pointer over some elements of your worksheets, such as URLs. They are intended to be helpful reminders of what the element is used for, but some people find these ScreenTips distracting. Fortunately Microsoft provided a way for you to control whether they are displayed or not. To turn off ScreenTips, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Office button and then click Excel Options. Excel displays the Excel Options dialog box.
  2. Make sure the Popular option is selected at the left of the dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  3. Using the ScreenTip Style drop-down list, choose Don't Show ScreenTips.
  4. Click OK.
